How to Read a Home Inspection Report
We understand reading a home inspection report can sometimes be a daunting task, but we are here to help! Keep reading to learn some tips on how to get the most out of your home inspection report.
Inspection Report Tips
As home inspectors, we often get questions from homebuyers about how to read a home inspection report. Here are a few tips to help you understand what you’re reading.
First
A home inspection report is not a pass/fail report. The purpose of a home inspection is to provide information about the condition of a home so that the buyer can make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase the property.
Second
Keep in mind that the home inspector is looking for major defects that could affect the safety, function, or value of the home. The inspector is not responsible for repairing or correcting any of the defects that are found.
Third
Home inspection reports are typically organized by system or area of the home. For example, the report may have a section on the roof, followed by a section on the electrical system, and so on.
Fourth
Each section of the report will include a description of the condition of the system or area that was inspected, as well as any defects that were found. The report may also include photographs of the defects.
Finally
Don’t hesitate to ask the home inspector for clarification if you have any questions about the report. The inspector should be able to explain the report in detail and help you understand what you’re reading.
